Urban Exile

Those of you who minister and live in urban areas should check out David Swanson's piece about the temptation of declining churches to flee the city for the suburbs and the Biblical reasoning for staying in difficult neighborhoods. I found it very relevant to my church's current situation.

Cool. My church is in the process of transforming from an suburban church to urban one. We lost about a quarter of our weekly attendance over it... it's a really slow journey to becoming a mult-ethnic, urban congregation, but I don't see how we can do otherwise.

Cool - you guys will have my prayers. We're in a neighborhood that was the 'burbs of Louisville back in the 50s, but now is very much an urban area. We're seeking to adapt to meet our changing community. It's not an easy process, but like you said - it's the calling of the gospel. Godspeed.
