GoldenEye 64 - Live Action

If you're like me, and your high school memories are saturated with staying up all night with three friends playing GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64, then I'm fairly confident this live-action rendition of the game will completely crack you up.

Can't Wait For This Game

The best storytelling in videogames today (and better storytelling than many movies) continues next year with the arrival of Mass Effect 2. As a big fan of the first, I'm eagerly counting down.

Tired of Madden?

If so, you may want to take a look at this upcoming football game from developer NaturalMotion, Backbreaker. The game contains no canned tackle animations like Madden, instead, every collision is rendered in real-time by the game's Euphoria physics engine, the same engine utilized last year in games like Grand Theft Auto IV and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. What does that mean in non-tech speak? Every tackle will be unique, every time. I'm interested to see how they pull this one off this fall.

Shepherd's Back - Or is He?

I blogged a while back about my great love for BioWare's sci-fi RPG epic Mass Effect. The gaming community has long known that the game was the first in a planned trilogy, but over the weekend the first official glimpse of Mass Effect 2 was revealed with a teaser trailer. The video is certainly a teaser, and it has Mass Effect fans like me in a tizzy over the fate of the Commander Shepherd we created and shaped in the first game. The developers at BioWare are telling Xbox 360 owners to hang onto their saved games from the original Mass Effect for use with the sequel, so perhaps the trailer isn't quite what it seems. Anyway, have a look - and if you haven't played the first Mass Effect, really, what are you waiting for?

Battlefield Flashback

There is likely no game that I've spent as much time playing online as Battlefield: 1942. The Battlefield formula is great - team-based multiplayer combat centered around attacking and defending certain locations. I've really enjoyed the latest in the series, Battlefield: Bad Company, but I'm quite excited about the newly announced Battlefield: 1943, which will be an Xbox Live Arcade title this summer, updating some of the classic Battlefield maps with the new technology of the Frostbite engine. Looks like it should be a blast (no pun intended). Here's the trailer.

I Would Play "Noah: Operation Rogue Beast"

Check out this very funny post from blogger Seth Ward, who takes on crappy Christian pop-culture (anybody remember playing Noah's Ark on your old NES as a kid like me? - wow, that was bad) by imagining Christian video games that would actually be fun.

Livin' On the Edge

Way back in July, I posted about an upcoming video game that caught my eye called Mirror's Edge. The game looked unique for its use of a first-person perspective, but its focus on running and traversing the environment (think freerunning or parkour) rather than gunplay. I picked up the game this week upon its Tuesday release, and I can tell you that it has absolutely delivered on my expectations. It's among the most immersive game experiences I've ever had - it's an absoulte adrenaline rush leaping across the cityscape with enemies in hot pursuit. The game captures a sense of motion and momentum better than any I've ever played. I'm only a couple chapters into the game, but I've already gone back and replayed levels I've already finished, because half the fun in Mirror's Edge comes not from getting from A to B, but how you get there. If you're into gaming and you'd like something that feels truly original, you need to pick this one up.

The Next Level of Video Game Storytelling

Last night, I just finished playing through Mass Effect for the Xbox 360, a game that I had looked forward to for over a year and that lived up to (and shattered) my expectations in every way. The game blurs the line between movie and game by telling a fantastic story through beautifully rendered graphics, great voice talent, and a dialog system that makes you feel like you are driving the story forward based on your decisions. If you have a 360 (or a good gaming PC for that matter) you simply must check this one out. Here's a look...

Can't Wait

Check out this video for the upcoming PS3/Xbox 360 game Red Faction: Guerrilla, the first game to feature destructible environments where every building is completely rendered in a real-time structural physics engine. Translation - if it would fall down in the real world, it will fall down in the game.

A Great Time to Be a Gamer

If you're into videogames, you'll probably agree that this generation of games has seen some truly great innovations. Not only have graphics entered the HD era, but more importantly game developers have made countless strides in making gameplay feel rich, immersive, and truly realistic. This week is the game industry's biggest trade show, the Electronic Entertainment Expo - more commonly known as E3. A ton of title's I'm really looking forward to have been shown, including Fable 2, Fallout 3, and Halo Wars. However, one I didn't expect caught my eye this morning in the form of a trailer. The game is called Mirror's Edge and is developed by DICE, the same company that birthed the great Battlefield 1942 and it's subsequent iterations. Mirror's Edge is a first-person game, but don't dare call it a shooter. In fact, the focus of the game is running. That's right, running. Sounds boring, right? Well, imagine the opening chase scene of the movie Casino Royale, then imagine yourself in that scene. That's the vibe this game gives. If the developers can pull it off, it promises to be one of the more unique experiences you'll have on your Xbox 360 or PS3 this winter. Check this out...

The Xbox as an Avenue For Worship

If you enjoy playing video games (as I do), Corey Reyonlds has a post today that should be required reading. An excerpt...
New popular video games are lauded for their ability to simulate real life. Cities have regular traffic patterns (Burnout: Paradise), game characters have real conversations with one another while they go about their daily routines (The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion), and when it starts to rain (according to a realistic weather simulation system), the people who don't have umbrellas hold their newspapers over their heads and run for the nearest awning or awaiting taxi (GTA IV). For some reason, we are incredibly awed by this while not being quite so fascinated with the real thing.
